Japantown is a collection of cultural sites, restaurants, teahouses, shops, and theaters - it honors and showcases the beauty of Japanese culture.
The Kabuki theater complex is the focal point, offering everything from movies to traditional Noh theater to Japanese baths and massage. Expect to find wonderfully fresh sushi here! In the Spring and Summer, the Peace Plaza is the site of numerous festivals.
Located between Post and Geary Streets and Laguna and Fillmore Streets, Japantown melds with its environs. Japantown is not designed to afford the visitor with a look at authentic Japanese daily life, but rather a glimpse into its finest cultural aspects. An afternoon would be sufficient time to spend in Japantown and see it thoroughly.
The Cherry Blossom Festival takes place in Japantown during two weekends in April. It showcases traditional Japanese arts with continuous demonstrations of, among others, tea ceremonies, martial arts, taiko drumming, and traditional dancing on an outdoor stage in the Japan Center. There are also parades, Asian food kiosks, and live music.
